I was in Portugal at the beginning of this year, unfortunately it was not a trip for pleasure, but rather, a very sad and unexpected family emergency. I did however get the opportunity to eat out a few times and on one of those occasions I was introduced to Pears in Red Wine for dessert. The pears were so delicious that it stuck with me and I knew it was something I had to try to make once I returned from my trip.
I am in love with Rocha Pears…these sweet pears from Portugal are wonderful!
Perfect for a snack on their own, with cheese or preserves. These pears are often used in desserts and they are available here in Canada. They were the perfect choice for this new recipe that I wanted to try.
If you can’t find Rocha Pears, please feel free to try the recipe with another variety…as long as they are sweet!

Poached Pears in Red Wine
Ingredients
- 4 Pears (peeled and halved)
- 1/2 bottle red wine
- 3/4 to 1 cup of sugar
- 1/2 cup of water
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 2 strips of lemon or orange peel
Instructions
- Peel the pears, slice in half and remove the core. Add pears to a medium saucepan, cover with sugar and water, turn heat to medium high. As sugar melts, add the wine (enough to cover or almost cover the pears), cinnamon stick, and lemon or orange peel. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 45 minutes.
- Once cooked, allow the pears to cool slightly before serving.
- Remove pears to desired serving dish, drizzle with wine sauce.

Note: Since the wine is being boiled, there will be no traces of alcohol in this recipe, making it a perfect family treat.
Best served warm with vanilla ice-cream!
