5 Things I Can Never Leave Portugal Without

Portugal is my second home. I try to visit as often as I possibly can. I love the country not only for its stunning landscapes and rich history, but also for the unique products that I always bring back from my trips there. Every time I visit this beautiful country, there are 5 things that I can never leave Portugal without.

1. Cork Products

Portugal is the world’s largest producer of cork, and they craft some of the most exquisite products from this sustainable material. There are many cork products available, including shoes, bags, wallets, coasters, hats, and jewelry. I personally gravitate towards the stylish purses and trivets. I always end up purchasing a few cork items before I travel back to Canada.

2. Ginja or Port Wine

When I visit Portugal, I love to indulge in their delicious wines. Although Ginja and Port wine are different, I count them as 1 of my 5 things because I always bring at least one of them home. Ginja, a sweet cherry liqueur, is a personal favourite of mine. I love walking around Óbidos and purchasing the liqueur in chocolate cups. I never fail to leave Óbidos with a bottle of Ginja. Another Portuguese classic is Port wine, produced in the Duoro region. I love bringing back a bottle (or two) to hold me over until the next time I return to Portugal.

3. Milka Chocolate

While Milka is a well-known brand worldwide, I was first introduced to the brand in Portugal. Although in the last couple of years I have been able to find more Milka products in Canada, I have yet to find my favourite in local stores. My go-to Milka chocolate is the Choco Wafer. I always stock up before coming home to Canada to satisfy my sweet tooth.

4. Canned Sardines

Portugal is famous for its sardines, fresh and canned. They make for a tasty and convenient souvenir to bring back home. Whether enjoyed alone or eaten with bread and olives, these fish will always remind me of Portugal. The Lisbon airport has the circus-inspired O Mundo Fantastico da Sardinha Portuguesa (Fantastic World of Portuguese Sardines) shop where you can purchase a couple of cans before you board your plane if you have forgotten to buy some during your trip.

5. Jams and Marmalades

Last but not least, I always make sure to grab a few jars of jam before leaving Portugal. I love Portuguese fig and Rocha Pear jams, and of course, I can never forget quince marmalade. I find the variety of jams and the value to be superior to what I can get in Canada. Plus, they make for great gifts to share with friends and family back home!

I don’t think I have ever been or will ever go to Portugal without purchasing these 5 things. These staple items never fail to bring back memories and allow me to have a little piece of Portugal when I am home. What is your favourite thing to bring back from a trip abroad? Did I list anything that you have never seen or tried?

Happy travels!
